This test analyses abnormalities in the MTHFR genes.

Testing Method:

Buccal swab or Blood draw

Description:

The MTHFR gene provides instructions for producing an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, which plays an important role in how the body processes folate (vitamin B9) and regulates homocysteine levels. This enzyme helps convert folate into its active form, which is needed for many essential functions including DNA production, detoxification, mood regulation, cardiovascular health, and the conversion of homocysteine into methionine — an amino acid required for protein synthesis and other vital compounds in the body.

Variations (also called SNPs or mutations) in the MTHFR gene can reduce the efficiency of this enzyme. The two most commonly tested variants are C677T and A1298C. Certain genetic combinations, particularly the C677T variant, may be associated with elevated homocysteine levels, especially when dietary intake of folate and other B vitamins is low.

Individuals who inherit two copies of a mutation (one from each parent) are referred to as homozygous and may have a greater impact on enzyme function.

MTHFR gene variations have been researched in relation to a range of health concerns, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Neurological and cognitive symptoms
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Methylation and detoxification support

Testing method options:

Testing may provide valuable insight into how your body processes folate and whether nutritional support may be beneficial. The MTHFR Gene Test can be performed using a blood sample, blood spot, or simple cheek (buccal) swab.

Genes Tested:

  • MTHFR C677T SNP
  • MTHFR A1298C SNP
